My grandfather had a job in analytical chemists from as lab assistant 1907-1910 John Heron and son Fenchurch St EC1....then going to a brewery probably a short time wonder which one..later going to Suffolk c 1911 to work in explosives factory. He had left school aged 14 but realised had to go to West Ham tech college to train as chemist so we are told.
